The album includes one full-length instrumental, a track including a choir, and only one sample throughout its entirety, as opposed to some of his popular counterparts that use samples on just about every track they produce. The anthology is made up of eleven tracks, four of which are longer than five minutes, and all showcasing the incredible complexity and experimentation that Donald Glover put in. The 2017 album, “Awaken, My Love” is an absolute work of art that Redbone doesn’t even scratch the surface of. What I mean is in Childish Gambino’s case, the thousands of radio listeners and the 300+ million Redbone spotify streamers fail to explore the rest of what Gambino has to offer. Nobody wants the fear of losing their partner to cheating, but those thoughts are tough to keep out of your head.Īs is the case with many popular songs that reach the top of the charts, the general audience of that music fails to dig deeper into the works of those artists. When dissected, these are lyrics that many people can relate too. Donald Glover explains that the lyrics of this song tell a story of paranoia- a man fearing that his girlfriend is unfaithful in their relationship, but also fearing that his efforts to keep her satisfied will drive her away. Well the case is that neither of those are true- the artist wanted something different with his fourth studio album, so he tried different techniques of singing. Many critics and listeners alike originally believed that this track was produced with a female singing the vocals, or even his own vocals that were pitched in the editing of this song. The vocals of Gambino are nothing short of extraordinary. The song begins with what appears to be an ominous stringed instrument played over a uniform beat of a drum, but after about four seconds, an awesome guitar riff begins, as well as a pounding bassline. If you’ve never heard him before, then you’re really in for a treat. In the case that you’ve listened to the work of Childish Gambino pre-Redbone, you’d know that this single sounds completely different from anything else he’s ever produced. But it’s hard to decipher whether this success was all thanks to twitter, or was Redbone able to hit international fame for being an awesome song? The song’s popularity skyrocketed it to Billboard Hot 100’s top 20, and kept it on the charts for over six months. In May of 2017, the average number of daily twitter users was 157 million, meaning the number of people seeing Redbone appear on their timeline was absolutely enormous. That’s why when Redbone came to be an internet meme, it absolutely blew up. Teens and young adults tend to listen to what their peers are showing them, music that shows up in the mainstream, and whatever is successful at pumping up an audience. When you think about the repertoire of songs that most fifteen to twenty-year-olds are listening to, the population doesn’t have much taste. Of course, everyone listening knew what was about to come, and when the introductory booming bass of “Redbone” started, the crowd went insane and sang along to his every word, creating the perfect encore to his set. The artist strategically lined up other artists’ songs that you’d typically hear at a house party, and gave a small speech stating how each one would sound in a certain party situation. After playing arguably his most popular song “Sober,” Gambino began to set up the crowd for what they were all anticipating. He played an incredible set with hits from his past albums like 2014’s “Kauai” and 2013’s “Because the Internet,” but of course he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to close with Redbone from “Awaken, My Love,” which had reached the peak of its internet fame at that point in time. I had the pleasure of seeing Childish Gambino this past June at the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City. This original tweet blew up and garnered over 200,000 likes, and 85,000+ retweets, inspiring others to make their own renditions for their shot at internet fame. If you’re not familiar, the original post was tweeted by user in which she muffled the clip of Gambino’s song, as if it were heard through a closed door at a party. Childish Gambino’s song, “Redbone” and how it would’ve sounded while you’re making out in the bathroom of a house party. If you’re anyone who logged onto twitter in the months of May or June of 2017, you may have seen the buzz around Donald Glover A.K.A.
